Their gold and silver coats on the surface are electroplated by chemical methods.
Metals can be electroplated, but have you seen that plastic can also be electroplated? In fact, plating metal coats on plastics is not an easy task. Because plastic is an insulator, it is difficult for the ions to enter, and the plastic is afraid of heat, the temperature is high and it is easy to melt, and the expansion coefficient of plastic and metal is not the same. It is not possible to directly plate metal onto the surface of plastic products. After repeated experiments, a new type of plastic called “ABS” was finally invented. Once it hits chromic acid, the surface would be corroded, resulting in many micropores, which are called roughening in the electroplating industry.
After roughening this material, chemical methods are used to deposit stannous chloride, silver nitrate, and copper sulfate into the micropores on the surface of the corroded plastic product so that a conductive metal film is attached to the plastic surface. This can be used to electroplating nickel chrome and other metal coats on the buttons. The plastics currently suitable for electroplating are still limited to "ABS". However, I believe that in the future development, there will certainly be new types of materials put into the production of "metal" buttons, both light and metallic texture.
